BBC Radio Devon broke the tragic news
A Royal Marine who died after collapsing at a rugby match in Plymouth has been named.
Craig Hodgkinson fell to the ground about 20 minutes into the annual fixture match between the Royal Navy and Cornwall County on Tuesday night.
Marine Hodgkinson, 27, from Strathblane in Stirlingshire, joined the Royal Marines in 2004, and played rugby at international level for the Marines.
The Royal Navy said the "larger than life" Marine would be "sorely missed"
The match at the Rectory in Devonport was abandoned.
Marine Hodgkinson was a keen rugby player who played throughout his school career, including games for the Scotland Under 18s XV.
He also played for Glasgow Hawks and was a member of the team that toured South Africa in 2003 and were unbeaten in their three matches.
After joining the Marines in May 2004 he won a top recruit award at training and joined 4 Assault Squadron Royal Marines onboard HMS Bulwark in 2005.
Cdr Andy Aspden, Executive Officer of HMS Bulwark, said: "Craig was a larger than life character who had the potential to go far within the Royal Marines.
"He was intelligent, mature, highly professional and an extremely fit individual who was passionate about life and sports. He will be sorely missed."
'Great attitude'
Cornwall RFU secretary Alan Mitchell said: "We are very upset over what has happened. All medical facilities required were there within seconds."
Cdr Mark Deller, of the Royal Navy Rugby Union said the squad would remember him for his "great attitude and humour, both on and off the park, where he balanced a clear desire to win with a sense of fun.
"Our thoughts are very much with his family and girlfriend at this very sad time."
The memory of Craig lives on through the work of the Craig Hodgkinson Trust and was recognised in a Memorial match between Hawks and the Royal Navy held at Old Anniesland in May 2007
Through the work of the Craig Hodgkinson Trust
"Rugby clubs and community sporting venues across Scotland may receive life-saving equipment thanks to a unique partnership between the Craig Hodgkinson Memorial Trust, British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service."
