Warriors follow in footsteps of All Blacks and Springboks
Back to the future at Hampden
With the announcement that this years Glasgow leg of the 1872 Cup is to take place at Hampden Park it’s maybe a good omen for Warriors as Glasgow prevailed when the Inter City was last played there in December 1885 albeit it was at 2nd Hampden the ground that was later Cathkin Park home to Third Lanark
Queens Park granted the use of their ground partly because earlier that year they had been granted the use of Merchiston pitches at Colinton for the staging of a FA Cup Semi Final replay against Notts Forrest
For the 1885 inter city special trains were run from Edinburgh to Cathcart a station long gone for supporters from the Capital
The newspapers recorded that the Sons of St Mungo had carried off the honours
Strangely the match clashed that day with a game at Tynecastle between Hearts and Watsonians under “Association “ rules
Scotland won the Calcutta Cup at Hampden in 1896 hosted the 1905 All Blacks and also beat the Springboks in 1906 The last two matches being played at 3rd and present Hampden
The attendance record at Hampden was !49.547 for the Scotland v England match i in 1937
Now it’s up to Warriors to write their own chapter in the history of the Grand Old Lady of Mount Florida
